Join us for a special evening with succulent hybridizer Russell Wagner, an Oakland-based grower known for his work with winter-active South African succulents and bulbs!

Russell has explored a wide range of plant groups over the years, including euphorbias, haworthias, cacti, pelargoniums, crassulas, and Canary Island succulents. His primary focus, however, is on winter-growing species such as mesembs (living stones), Gethyllis, Massonia, Tylecodon, and Adromischus. His greenhouse is a remarkable collection of forms, textures, and colors, much of it grown from seed and shaped by decades of curiosity and experimentation.

In this talk, Russell will present a kaleidoscopic look at variation within species and the unexpected outcomes of hybridization. He’ll explore how growing from seed and crossing plants opens the door to entirely new expressions, where each grower’s choices and aesthetic lead to completely unique results.

Member Participation – Bring Your Plants

Members are encouraged to bring plants for an extended show-and-tell discussion!

Especially welcome:

Seed-grown plants
Mesembs (living stones and related plants)
Hybrid succulents of any kind

This will be a chance to share your plants, compare notes, and explore how different growers approach selection, hybridization, and the creative process of growing from seed.

Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, your plants are part of the conversation.
